About How-To Geek

Microsoft changed the default thư mục inhỏ in Windows 10 to lớn a flat, closed folder. If you prefer the open folder inhỏ from Windows 7, you can make that the mặc định folder ibé in Windows 10 with a registry tweak.

You can, of course, change any folder’s ibé by right-clicking on it, but if you want to change all the folders at once, you’ll need khổng lồ dig into lớn the registry.

How lớn Change the Folder Icons khổng lồ Windows 7-Style Icons Using the Registry Editor

Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple haông chồng and as long as you stiông xã to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve sầu never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (và your computer!) before making changes.

To start, download the Windows 7 thư mục ibé tệp tin. Extract the Folder.iteo tệp tin from the .zip file & place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive sầu. It doesn’t matter where, but you’ll need lớn leave the .iteo tệp tin in its place for good, so don’t put it somewhere temporary lượt thích your desktop. You can change the name of the folder inhỏ tệp tin, but do not change the .ico extension.

Then, open the Registry Editor by clicking on Start & typing regedit. Press Enter lớn open Registry Editor, or cliông chồng on “regedit” under Best match.

Give the Registry Editor permission khổng lồ make changes to your PC.

NOTE: You may not see this dialog box, depending on your User Account Control settings.

In the tree structure on the left, navigate khổng lồ the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerRight-cliông xã on the Explorer key và select “New > Key” from the popup thực đơn.

Type Shell Icons as the name of the new key & press Enter.

Right-clichồng in the empty space on the right & select “New > String Value” from the popup menu.

Type 3 as the name of the string value và press Enter.

If that doesn’t help, you can turn on the setting to lớn always show icons và never show thumbnails. To vì this, open File Explorer and clichồng on the “View” tab.

Cliông chồng the “Options” button on the View tab.

On the Folder Options dialog box, cliông chồng the “View” tab & check the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” box under Advanced settings. Cliông chồng “OK”.

You can also try rebuilding the ibé cađậy khổng lồ refresh them. To bởi vì this, download a không tính tiền tool called Rebuild Inhỏ Cađậy & extract the “Rebuild Ibé Cađậy.exe” tệp tin. The current icon cache database is backed up and then rebuilt and explorer.exe is restarted automatically.

Change Default Folder Icon in Windows 10

These hacks are really just the applicable key & values we talked about in this article exported to .REG tệp tin that add the key và the value or remove them. Running the “Change khổng lồ the Windows 7 Folder Inhỏ.reg” haông xã creates the “Shell Icons” key và adds the “3” & “4” string values. However, you need khổng lồ change the path lớn match the path khổng lồ the Folder.ico tệp tin on your computer. Replace the part of the path highlighted on the image below with your path, including the name of the .iteo tệp tin, if you changed it. Make sure you use two backslashes between the parts of the path, as shown below & leave the parts of the path not highlighted on the image below as is.

If you enjoy fiddling with the Registry, it’s worth taking the time to lớn learn how lớn make your own Registry hacks.
